Molecular Imaging and Mass Spectrometry PLATFORM (mims platform)

The Molecular Imaging and Mass Spectrometry Platform aims primarily to provide advanced capabilities for the spatial characterization of molecules in biological tissues, offering key information for biomedical research, translational research, and related fields such as pharmacology, microbiology, and biotechnology.

Its versatility allows for both targeted and exploratory studies, facilitating the identification of biomarkers, the definition of molecular signatures, and the understanding of complex pathological mechanisms.

The platform integrates a set of next generation technologies, which currently include ultra high resolution magnetic resonance mass spectrometry, MALDI and ESI ionization, ultra high performance liquid chromatography, as well as specialized equipment for sample preparation and advanced software for processing, visualization, and interpretation of spatially resolved multi omics data.on.

The platform seeks to meet the growing demand for technologies that enable the integration of multi omics information (metabolomics, lipidomics, and proteomics) with spatial resolution. Ultra high resolution mass spectrometry, combined with techniques such as MALDI and ESI, offers a unique capability to identify biomarkers and study pathological mechanisms in situ.

Objectives of the MIMS Platform:

  1. Promote high quality biomedical research, facilitating researchers’ access to advanced molecular imaging and mass spectrometry technologies, and ensuring high standards of rigour, reproducibility, and scientific excellence.
  2. Foster innovation in diagnosis, prognosis, and personalized therapy through the identification of spatial biomarkers, in situ molecular characterization, and the integration of multi omics information into translational research projects.
  3. Train and specialize research and technical staff, offering structured training, expert support, and learning pathways in advanced mass spectrometry techniques, molecular imaging, and related data analysis..
  4. Promote synergies and strategic collaborations, internal and external, encouraging the participation of IdISBa in scientific networks, multicentre projects, and partnerships with research centres, hospitals, and universities at national and international levels, to maximize the use and impact of the infrastructure..
  5. Ensure efficient and sustainable use of the equipment, optimizing management, maintenance, and shared use processes, and ensuring that the platform is fully integrated within the Institute’s platform ecosystem.
