
The Molecular Imaging and Mass Spectrometry platform's main purpose is to provide advanced capabilities for the spatial characterization of molecules in biological tissues, providing key information for biomedical research, translational research and related fields such as pharmacology, microbiology or biotechnology.
Its versatility allows for both targeted and exploratory studies, facilitating the identification of biomarkers, the definition of molecular signatures, and the understanding of complex pathological mechanisms.
The platform integrates a suite of cutting-edge technologies, including, at the time of its creation, ultra-high-resolution magnetic resonance spectroscopy, MALDI and ESI ionization, ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography, as well as specialized equipment for sample preparation and advanced software for the processing, visualization, and interpretation of multi-omics data with spatial resolution.
The platform aims to address the growing demand for technologies that enable the integration of multi-omics information (metabolomics, lipidomics, proteomics) with spatial resolution. Ultra-high-resolution mass spectrometry, combined with techniques such as MALDI and ESI, offers a unique capability for identifying biomarkers and studying pathological mechanisms in situ.
PT-MIMS objectives:
- To promote high-quality biomedical research by facilitating researchers' access to advanced molecular imaging and mass spectrometry technologies, and ensuring high standards of rigor, reproducibility, and scientific excellence,
- To foster innovation in diagnosis, prognosis, and personalized therapeutics through the identification of spatial biomarkers, in situ molecular characterization, and the integration of multi-omics information in translational research projects.
- To train and specialize research and technical staff by offering structured training, expert support, and learning pathways in advanced mass spectrometry, molecular imaging, and related data analysis techniques..
- To promote synergies and strategic collaborations, both internal and external, encouraging IdISBa's participation in scientific networks, multicenter projects, and alliances with national and international research centers, hospitals, and universities to maximize the use and impact of the infrastructure..
- To ensure efficient and sustainable operation of the equipment, optimizing management, maintenance and shared use processes, and ensuring that the platform is fully integrated into the Institute's ecosystem of platforms.
Services:
The service offers a range of specialized activities focused on molecular characterization and advanced analysis of biological samples using state-of-the-art technologies. Portfolio include:
- Ultra-high resolution molecular mass spectometry imaging by magnetic resonance, used for the detection and spatial localization of metabolites and lipids in tissues, with precision and sensitivity that enable detailed studies of molecular composition .
- Direct injection molecular phenotyping (DIP) using MRMS , that facilitates the rapid and reliable analysis of metabolic and lipid profiles without the need for prior separation, optimizing both time and the quality of results
- Liquid chromatography for the analysis of metabolic and lipid compounds using MRMS, that combines chromatographic separation with the ultra-high resolution of mass spectrometry, ensuring accurate and robust identification of components of interest.
- Data analysis and report generation, that include the processing, interpretation, and presentation of results in standardized formats, guaranteeing traceability and utility for research and development projects.

The laboratory has a magnetic resonance mass spectrometry system (ScimaX-MRMS, Bruker) and an ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography system (UHPLC Elute+, Bruker). This state-of-the-art platform enables molecular characterization with exceptional resolution and precision, facilitating the detailed analysis of complex compounds and contributing to advanced studies in metabolomics, lipidomics, and proteomics.
Additionally, the laboratory is equipped with specialized devices for molecular imaging techniques using mass spectrometry (MSI), such as the Sprayer M3+ and the SubliMATE system (HTX Imaging Technologies). These instruments ensure homogeneous and controlled sample preparation, essential aspects for MSI analysis, which also guarantee increased quality, reproducibility, and reliability of experimental results.
