The 1st Rare Diseases Run Raises €2,857 to Support Research by IdISBa’s Health Genomics Group
The 1st Rare Diseases Run, held last February under the slogan "Adding Miles for Research", raised a total of €2,857, an amount that will be entirely allocated to the Health Genomics Group at the Health Research Institute of the Balearic Islands (IdISBa) to support research in the field of rare diseases.
The initiative, promoted by the Rare Diseases Associations and Patients Group of the Balearic Islands in collaboration with IdISBa, was launched with the aim of raising awareness about the reality of rare diseases, promoting research, and advocating for improved health and social care for affected individuals.
The event brought together participants of all ages in a sporting and charitable day that included several race formats adapted for the general public, as well as the option to contribute through a solidarity race bib.
The €2,857 raised will help strengthen the research activity of the Health Genomics Group, which focuses on studying the genetic basis of diseases and generating knowledge that may lead to more accurate diagnoses and new therapeutic opportunities for people affected by rare disorders.
The organisers would like to thank all runners, patient associations, volunteers, and everyone who contributed to making this first edition possible. The positive response highlights the commitment of Balearic society to rare diseases and the importance of joining forces to advance biomedical research.
In Europe, rare diseases are defined as those affecting fewer than five people per 10,000 inhabitants. Although each individual disease has a low prevalence, together they affect millions of people and represent a major health and social challenge. For this reason, initiatives such as the 1st Rare Diseases Run contribute both to raising funds for research and to increasing public awareness.
