Santa Maria del Camí rallies against breast cancer through awareness and fundraising activities
Breast Cancer Awareness Week in Santa Maria del Camí brought together sport, public engagement and scientific outreach in a solidarity initiative that attracted more than one hundred participants and raised €530 for breast cancer research.
Organised by the Town Council of Santa Maria del Camí, in collaboration with several organisations and institutions, the initiative aimed to raise awareness of the importance of prevention, early detection and research to improve the diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer.
The programme began with "Rodam contra el càncer" (Pedalling Against Cancer), a series of fundraising indoor cycling sessions held at the Casal d'Entitats Sa Graduada. A total of 10 participants took part, each making a €5 donation, resulting in €50 being raised.
The largest event of the week was the 4th Pink Walk (IV Caminada en Rosa), which brought together 96 participants through the streets of the town. With a €5 contribution per participant, the walk raised €480, all of which will be allocated to breast cancer research.
The programme also featured the public lecture "Tracing Breast Cancer in the Balearic Islands: How We Research Cancer to Improve Patient Outcomes", held at the Espai Magrana in the Casal d'Entitats Sa Graduada. The event attracted around 25 to 30 attendees and was delivered by Mercedes Nadal Serrano and Pere Miquel Morlá Barceló, researchers at IdISBa and members of the Translational Oncology Multidisciplinary Group. During the session, they shared insights into the research being carried out in the Balearic Islands to better understand breast cancer and improve prognosis and treatment outcomes for patients.
The speakers highlighted the warm welcome received from both the organisers and attendees, describing the event as a highly rewarding experience. Initiatives such as these help bring science closer to society, encourage public engagement with biomedical research and create opportunities for dialogue between researchers, healthcare professionals and citizens.
All funds raised during the week will be used to support breast cancer research, specifically to the Translational Oncology Multidisciplinary Group (GMOT), helping advance knowledge and foster innovations that improve prevention, diagnosis and treatment.
IdISBa would like to thank the Town Council of Santa Maria del Camí, the collaborating organisations and everyone who took part in this solidarity initiative, once again demonstrating the strong commitment of Balearic society to breast cancer research and awareness.
